Pilot of Demolition Waste Management and Recovery system

YSK2 focuses on environmental consideration with respect to the method of demolition adopted and equipments used.

In the past few years, YSK2 is one of the demolition contractors engaged in “Green Demolition Scheme”. The adoption of the environmental and waste management for the demolition project, Ivy on Belcher meets with the requirements of the HK BEAM plus. HK BEAM plus seeks to provide a common set of performance standards to achieve the reduction of environment impacts and environmental improvement circumstances for building developments.

Although the Hung Hom Bay Peninsula demolition project was abandoned, we were able to work as a partner with
M/S Gammon Construction Ltd. to tailor-made and submit a high caliber of environmental sensitive and conscious approach to the demolition activity including air, noise and vibration control and monitoring, re-use and recycling of various types of building material in different categories, including dust control devices and satellite monitoring of the debris disposal trucks during their route of transportation.

For encouraging sustainability performance, we are capable to extend our services by implementing the following in compliance onto HK Beam plus / or LEED.

YSK2 Environmental Management System is certified to ISO14001:2015 standard

Our Environmental Strategy is continuously improving as we learn and develop new sustainable methods for each of our projects.  On all of our projects we ensure we use our resources as efficiently as possible, whilst doing so, we also aim to reuse and recycle materials to minimise waste to landfill.

Throughout all of our operations we ensure that environmental considerations are a priority.  This can range from our informed decisions about the selection of materials, waste management, transport and noise, dust and vibration monitoring solutions, in which we monitor:-

Air pollution / emissions from the site
Extensive dust control measures to be taken in accordance with the Air Pollution Control (Construction Dust ) Regulation, which includes the provision of an effective dust subvention and shield system, that is particularly important given the added wind effect in the open area of the site’s waterproofing condition, as well as appropriate water spraying for dust suppression.

Noise and vibration control
An effective and efficient approach would be adopting hydraulic crushers for demolition work.  For example, in the demolition of the Melbourne and Aik San Building in Westlands Road, developer M/S Swire Properties Limited had chosen and successively used 100% non-percussive method by using hydraulic crushers.  Noise level and vibration readings were measured and monitored.

Water discharge and concrete recycling
Arrangement for recycling use of the concrete, and re-circulation of water for wheel washing facilities where waste water from dust control and wheel washing is collected, filtered and treated for reuse.

Material usage
by using rapidly renewable materials such as the use of steel props, steel scaffolding and steel hoarding rather than wood or bamboo as metal is reusable or renewable. The use of light weight steel scaffolding incorporating genuine fire retarding tarpaulins is now considered best practice and a Buildings Department’s requirement. Our recent project for the redevelopment of Landmark East in Central has also introduced steel scaffolding work in demolition the first time in Hong Kong.

Managing and recycling of construction and demolition waste
On site or off site sorting of surplus construction and demolition (C&D) materials to minimize their generating during course of construction, crushing and delivery of materials to Government recycling and storage facilities, rather than public fill and landfill.

Removing of hazardous materials
early study and investigation at design stage by independent consultants for the existence of asbestos and other hazardous materials such as corrosive chemicals, dangerous goods or gas cylinders etc. would benefit the smoothness of work progress and minimize the risk of unnecessary contamination.
